What’s the difference between GPS and GNSS?

In satellite navigation, GPS and GNSS are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different technologies. GPS, developed by the U. S. GNSS includes multiple constellations like GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo, providing wider coverage and improved accuracy. There are four operational GNSS systems: the United States Global Positioning System (GPS), Russia’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) and the European Union’s Galileo.Despite being the first GNSS system, GPS is still the most accurate navigation system worldwide today. The newest GPS satellites use rubidium clocks and are synchronized to ground-based cesium clocks for even further accuracy.There are totally four Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) available. They are GPS (US), GLONASS (Russia), Galileo (EU), BeiDou (China).GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is Russia’s counterpart to the more widely known Global Positioning System (GPS). Moreover, it is developed and maintained by the Russian Federation to provide satellite-based navigation services crucial for global applications.

What are the disadvantages of GNSS?

A major drawback of a GNSS-aided navigation system is how weak the GNSS signal is once it reaches a receiver on Earth. Consequently, it can be quite easy to disrupt GNSS, whether unintentional or deliberate. Such disruption could degrade the signal or even deny its reception altogether. At a basic level, the terms GPS and GNSS refer to the same thing—a system that uses signals from satellites to accurately determine your location on Earth. Similar to the way “Kleenex” is one brand of tissues that is often used as a generic term for all tissues, GPS is one example of GNSS.GNSS generally offers better accuracy than GPS. While GPS is accurate to around 5-10 meters, GNSS can get you as close as 1-2 meters or even better under ideal conditions. This is because GNSS pulls data from multiple satellite systems, which gives it more options for positioning and improves precision.
