How did JPL get its name?
In 1944, 14 years before the formation of NASA, GALCIT was renamed the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (a name coined by von Kármán, Malina and Hsue-Shen Tsien). Malina was named director. That same year, JPL started to develop guided missiles (the Corporal). What is the use of JPL?
The primary function of the laboratory is the construction and operation of planetary robotic spacecraft, though it also conducts Earth-orbit and astronomy missions. It is also responsible for operating the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN). The Laboratory’s core capability is to integrate science, engineering and technology that provide end-to end implementation of space missions, through either use of its in-house experienced workforce or in collaborations with industry and academia.
How long has JPL existed?
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) of the California Institute of Technology had its origins in a student project to develop rocket propulsion in the late 1930s. It attracted funding from the U. S. Army just prior to U. S. World War II and became an Army missile research facility in 1943. During JPL’s Army years, the Laboratory developed two deployed weapon systems, the MGM-5 Corporal and MGM-29 Sergeant intermediate range ballistic missiles. These missiles were the first US ballistic missiles developed at JPL.
