Is the Rotax 912 a good engine?
The 912 is more fuel efficient and lighter than comparable older engines, e. Continental O-200, but originally had a shorter time between overhaul (TBO). On introduction, the TBO was only 600 hours, which was double that of previous Rotax engines but far short of existing engines of comparable size and power. The 912 ULS has a slightly larger bore and longer stroke than the 912 UL. Otherwise the two engines are very similar. The Rotax 914 UL engine is similar to the 912 UL, but with the addition of a turbo charger giving it a horsepower rating of 115 horsepower, as well as giving it much better altitude performance.With fuel consumption as low as 4–5 gallons per hour, the 912 ULS remains one of the most economical engines in its category—helping flight schools and private owners alike reduce total cost of ownership. The Rotax 912 ULS is certified for use with both AVGAS and MOGAS, adding operational flexibility across regions.Having discussed this with my Rotax mechanic he indicates the cost is so similar to a new engine there is no advantage. New Rotax 912 ULS is $23,000 plus shipping and installation (something you would have to do with a rebuilt also, or more, as you will be shipping two ways). Rebuild cost in the $20,000 plus range.

Rotax reduce the oil change intervals to 50Hrs (if you can, 25hrs wont harm) replace the spark plugs every 100hrs & have the slipper clutch inspected every 600hrs. So using Avgas will see you having to do a bit more maintenance.
