Engine improvements and progress in supercharger performance increased the Merlin’s rated power to over 1,715 kW (2,300 horsepower) by the end of the war. This engine, a developmental prototype in the Merlin 100 series, was built by Rolls-Royce in Derby, England, sometime between June and July 1944. The first two Packard-built Merlins to be completed were demonstrated on test stands at a special ceremony at the Packard plant in Detroit on Aug. Full production began in 1942.The original airframe was designed to be powered by a rolls-royce merlin engine producing 1,030 hp (768 kw). It was strong enough and adaptable enough to use increasingly powerful merlins, and in later marks, rolls-royce griffon engines producing up to 2,340 hp (1,745 kw).Several different construction methods were tried before the basic design of the Merlin was set. Early production Merlins were unreliable: common problems were cylinder head cracking, coolant leaks, and excessive wear to the camshafts and crankshaft main bearings.The Merlin was designed and built by Rolls-Royce. These powerful and reliable engines were fitted to many Second World War aircraft including the Avro Lancaster, Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire. Over 150,000 Merlin engines were built. Other companies were licensed to build Merlins in order to meet demand.
