Most were monoplanes with stabilizing tail surfaces mounted at the rear. He also tried a few biplane and folding wing designs, but the original monoplane glider, or Normal Segelapparat (standard sailing machine) as he called it, produced the best results. Lilienthal built at least eight gliders of this type. August 10th, 1896 – Otto Lilienthal was a pioneer of human aviation who became known as the Glider King. A German pioneer in aviation, Lilienthal made over 2,000 glider flights and is credited with perfecting the gull-wing design and set the long-held record of soaring to 1820 feet.

Lilienthal distinguished himself from the others by seeking to control the direction of the aircraft, making him the first pilot. He controlled his gliders by shifting his body weight to change its altitude, much the way a modern hang glider pilot does today. Lilienthal attended grammar school and studied the flight of birds with his brother Gustav (1849–1933). Fascinated by the idea of manned flight, Lilienthal and his brother made strap-on wings, but failed in their attempts to fly.
