What are placards in aircraft?
Placards affixed to aircraft contain warnings, operating limitations, and reference information. Objective of the Placard develop a highly visible device which will alert pilots when aircraft is undergoing maintenance and/or is not airworthy. Many organizations already use placards or notices to identify aircraft in maintenance.Placards warn the people of the presence of hazards while they’re driving or near large quantities of hazmat being transported. They inform emergency responders – if shipping papers aren’t available at the scene of an accident, a placard may be the only way responders know what materials are involved in the accident.

How many placards are required?
CFR Regulations If in bulk, you always need a placard. If non-bulk, then it depends on if the hazard class is in Table 1 or 2, and the amount that is being shipped. Also, in most cases, 4 placards are required, one on each side and one on each end. Placarding is generally not required for UN 3082 if the quantity is below the reportable threshold. However, if the load meets or exceeds the reportable quantity (RQ) or is being shipped in bulk (greater than 119 gallons or 450 liters), a Class 9 placard is required.
