What does ATR stand for?

Average True Range (ATR). What is the Average True Range? The average true range (ATR) is a price volatility indicator showing the average price variation of assets within a given time period. Investors can use the indicator to determine the best time for trading. The average true range also takes into account the gaps in the movement of price.Average True Range (ATR) is the average of true ranges over the specified period. ATR measures volatility, taking into account any gaps in the price movement. Typically, the ATR calculation is based on 14 periods, which can be intraday, daily, weekly, or monthly.Unlike many other indicators that focus on price direction, ATR is primarily concerned with price volatility. This unique characteristic makes it an invaluable tool for scalpers who thrive on short-term price fluctuations.

Is a higher ATR better?

Higher atr values indicate increased volatility, suggesting that prices are moving more dramatically. Conversely, lower atr values suggest decreased volatility and more stable price action. By reflecting the range within which an asset’s price moves, the atr helps traders identify optimal trading opportunities and set more informed entry and exit points. It is especially useful for assessing potential risk levels and planning stop-loss strategies, as it adapts to varying market conditions.ATR and Opening/Closing Positions The ATR can also be useful for determining when to open or close a position, be it short or long. High or increasing ATR values suggest that the strength of the trend is increasing, so it is better to continue opening positions in the same direction.
