What engines do gliders use?

Cross country and competition flights often cover 100-200 miles. The world record for glider distance covered is 1,358 miles. When racing in good weather conditions, pilots may fly anywhere up to the gliders maximum allowed speed – which usually ranges from around 135-155 knots (155-180mph) for a modern (post 1970) fibre glass glider.
How is a glider powered?
Because gliders carry no fuel or engines, they are usually lighter and simpler than powered aircraft. In order for a glider to fly, it must generate lift to oppose its weight. To generate lift, the glider must move through the air. But the motion of the glider through the air generates drag. A glider can stay airborne indefinitely – as long as it flies in updrafts. Updrafts or “lift” can carry a glider higher. In a way, lift is like in-flight refueling. If the pilot wants more altitude or if he wants to fly longer, he just goes back to the lift and fuels up.

Are gliders harder to fly than planes?
Flying gliders is not very difficult but does take practice.
