Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported (ACSS) is a composite concentric-lay stranded conductor with one or more layers of hard drawn and annealed 1350-0 aluminum wires on a central core of steel. ACSS is mainly used for overhead transmission and can handle temperatures of up to 250°C without failing. ACSS is known as a high-temperature low-sag advanced conductor and has higher efficiency than its aluminum conductor steel reinforced (ACSR) counterpart.The primary difference between ACSS and ACSR lies in their construction and material composition. While both use a steel core for strength, the outer aluminum conductors in each design differ in strand construction, alloy composition, and overall geometry.
