ADS-B allows equipped aircraft and ground vehicles to broadcast their identification, position, altitude and velocity to other aircraft and ATC. This is called ADS-B Out. Is ADS-B In required? To use flight following, aircraft must have a radio and transponder. Depending on airspace, a Mode C transponder and ADS-B Out may be required. Radar used by ATC cannot display altitude information without Mode C transponders. For aircraft operating below 18,000 feet and within U. S. Mode S transponder with Extended Squitter or a Universal Access Transceiver (UAT).
