Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) An Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) is a device that hosts applications that allow flight crews to perform a variety of functions that were traditionally accomplished by using paper products and tools.Some national aviation authorities (NAAs) now simplify their definition of electronic flight bag (EFB) as “any device, or combination of devices, actively displaying EFB applications. EFB devices’ can store and display a variety of aviation data or perform basic calculations for aircraft performance or fuel loading .The concept of Electronic Flight Bag is now part of the aircraft operation. EFB contains four main categories of information, each stored in separate applications: performance data, charts, mission information and documentation.EFBs are intended primarily for flight deck use and include the hardware and software necessary to support their intended function. EFB devices can display a variety of aviation data and perform basic calculations such as performance, weight & balance, fuel calculations, etc.
What does EFB stand for?
EFB stands for Enhanced Flooded Battery. It is an improved version of the conventional wet-cell battery, specifically developed for vehicles with basic start-stop systems. Compared to traditional lead-acid batteries, EFB batteries are more cycle-resistant, have a longer lifespan, and offer better charge acceptance. The primary benefits of EFB technology are improved charge acceptance and greater cyclic durability when operating in a reduced state of charge (typical of Stop Start applications). As an approximation, EFB batteries will provide 85,000 engine starts, compared to 30,000 starts from standard flooded product.EFB batteries are built for vehicles with basic start-stop systems. They can handle frequent charge and discharge cycles without significant performance loss.A. An Electronic Flight Bag or EFB is defined by ICAO as “An electronic information system, comprised of equipment and applications for flight crew, which allows for storing, updating, displaying and processing of EFB functions to support flight operations or duties. Class 2 EFBs may connect to aircraft power, data ports or installed antennas, provided the connections are installed in accordance with applicable airworthiness regulations. Class 3 EFB hardware is considered an aircraft component and is installed in accordance with applicable airworthiness regulations.This AMC defines three hardware classes of EFB system: Class 1, 2 and 3. Class 1. From an operational use perspective, Class 1 EFB systems are generally commercial off-theshelf (COTS)-based computer systems used for aircraft operations. It is portable and not attached to an aircraft mounting device.
