What is the best fuel for a Rotax 912?

Best fuel to use for your Airplane Light Sport Aircraft ROTAX engine is unleaded auto gas, premium (91 octane) for 100 HP 912S and 115 HP 914 turbo, but regular (87 octane) is OK for 81 HP 912. Specifications (Rotax 912 UL/A/F) Fuel type: Unleaded: 87 octane AKI (Canada/USA) / 90 octane RON (European) or higher. Leaded fuel and AVGAS 100 LL can be used but are not recommended.

How much fuel does a Rotax 912 use per hour?

With fuel consumption as low as 4–5 gallons per hour, the 912 ULS remains one of the most economical engines in its category—helping flight schools and private owners alike reduce total cost of ownership. The Rotax 912 ULS is certified for use with both AVGAS and MOGAS, adding operational flexibility across regions. Having discussed this with my Rotax mechanic he indicates the cost is so similar to a new engine there is no advantage. New Rotax 912 ULS is $23,000 plus shipping and installation (something you would have to do with a rebuilt also, or more, as you will be shipping two ways). Rebuild cost in the $20,000 plus range.

How often does a Rotax 912 need servicing?

Rotax reduce the oil change intervals to 50Hrs (if you can, 25hrs wont harm) replace the spark plugs every 100hrs & have the slipper clutch inspected every 600hrs. So using Avgas will see you having to do a bit more maintenance. USE OF AVGAS: If you find it necessary to use Avgas in your Rotax 912/914 aircraft engine you will need to replace your spark plugs twice as often, and change the oil and oil filter at least every 50 hours.
