What is the best material for speaker surround?

Rubber is one of the most common materials used for speaker surrounds. It gives the woofer the flexibility and strength it needs for extended use in the potentially extreme environmental conditions of your car. Foam is cheaper than rubber, lowering the production costs. According to our experience with refoaming speakers we think that the right (relatively thin) rubber surround can replace a foam surround without degrading performance too much.
