Why is it named Shenandoah?
Shenandoah County was formed in 1772 from Frederick County, and was originally named Dunmore County in honor of Governor Dunmore. In 1778 the name was changed to Shenandoah after the Shenandoah River, an Indian name Page 2 1-2 Shenandoah County Comprehensive Plan meaning “Daughter of the Stars. While long associated with a place, the name Shenandoah can be traced to a native from the Conestoga-Susquehannock tribe. According to the tribe, Shenandoah was adopted by the Oneida of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy due to the “decline and destabilization” of the Conestoga.
Where is Shenandoah in the USA?
Shenandoah National Park is located in the state of Virginia, about 70 miles west of Washington, D. C. The park is known for its breathtaking views along scenic Skyline Drive, which runs down the spine of the park. The Appalachian Trail also goes through the park for a stretch of about 95 miles. Five hundred miles of trails, consisting of 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail, lead visitors to waterfalls, panoramic views, protected wilderness, and preserved human history in the Shenandoah valley. A park full of recreational opportunities for the entire family, Shenandoah is worth a repeat visit.
