There is only one operational AN-225 in the world. The Ukrainian plane manufacturer Antonov developed the AN-225 during the Cold War in the 1980’s to airlift (in a piggyback fashion) the Buran spacecraft for the Soviet space program. The only completed An-225 was destroyed in the Battle of Antonov Airport in 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to complete the second An-225 to replace the destroyed aircraft.It was designed and built throughout the 1980s and took its maiden flight on 21st December 1988. A second AN-225 began production in the late 1980s but, in 2009 when the aircraft had still not yet been completed, production was abandoned.
