Was the F-100 Super Sabre good?
Was the F-100 Super Sabre a good aircraft? For its time it was good. It was able to fly at barely supersonic speeds and had a decent array of armament. It was a single engine so that was against it. F-100 Super Sabre flew most missions in Vietnam. The last combat F-100 departed Vietnam in 1971, after nearly eight years of combat. Super Sabres flew 360,283 combat sorties.
What replaced the F-100 Super Sabre?
The F-100 flew extensively over South Vietnam as the air force’s primary close air support aircraft until being replaced by the more capable subsonic LTV A-7 Corsair II, General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark, and the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. In 1965, during the early months of OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER (the first organized bombing campaign against North Vietnam), F-100s provided fighter escort and also bombed ground targets (alongside more capable F-105 Thunderchiefs).
