Who is Otto Lilienthal?

Otto Lilienthal (born May 23, 1848, Anklam, Prussia [now in Germany]—died Aug. Berlin) was a German aviation pioneer. Lilienthal was the most significant aeronautical pioneer in the years between the advancements of the Englishman George Cayley and the American Wright brothers. Lilienthal attended grammar school and studied the flight of birds with his brother Gustav (1849–1933). Fascinated by the idea of manned flight, Lilienthal and his brother made strap-on wings, but failed in their attempts to fly.
