Does Rafale have Safran engines?
French aerospace and defence company Safran, known for manufacturing the M88 jet engine that powers the Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft, has made important public statements regarding its readiness to open an engine production line in India as part of ongoing talks between France and India on a potential major Rafale . It suffers from low thrust and overheating, forcing the Tejas to use US GE engines. Technical gaps, poor management, and limited collaboration have slowed progress. The project has already cost more than six times the original budget. Tejas fighter jets continue to fly, but with American engines. If the Safran option works, it will be for engines to power Tejas Mk-2. With India requiring a large number of fighter jet engines in the future — especially in light of recent military tensions with Pakistan — officials are seeking alternatives to diversify sources and enhance the capabilities of its aircraft fleet.
Who owns Safran engines?
This engine is both developed and manufactured via a 50-50 joint venture company, CFM International, which Safran jointly owns with the American industrial conglomerate General Electric (GE). CFM is the world’s largest commercial aircraft engine manufacturer, with a 39% market share as of 2020 . It has delivered more than 37,500 of its engines to more than 570 operators. The name CFM is derived from the two parent companies’ commercial engine designations: GE’s CF series and Snecma’s M series.
