Why are Spitfire wings clipped?

Clipped wing Spitfires were actually modified for speed and agility at low altitude, especially to intercept low-flying threats like the Fw190. Removing the rounded tips reduced drag, improved roll rate, and made them deadly fast near the deck. The cannons initially that were put into Spitfires were not popular. Because of the wing, they had to tilt the cannons on the side and if the pilot pulled any high-G manoeuvres, as a fighter pilot would when he’s trying to fight for his life, the guns would jam. What made the Spitfire so different from anything else in the sky was its shape. The elliptical wings weren’t just for looks—they reduced drag, improved lift, and gave the aircraft remarkable agility. It was one of the few fighters that could turn as tightly as it did without losing control or speed.
